See the calculators →Work it from the cost up, not from what the last guy quoted. 9 hours at a loaded rate of $34.58 is $311.22 of labour, plus $1,450.00 of materials and $120.00 of overhead — a break-even of $1,881.22. Below that you paid to work. To keep 35 cents of every dollar you quote $1,881.22 / 0.65 = $2,894.18.
More than the wage. At $26.00 an hour with payroll tax, workers comp, liability insurance and paid time off adding about 33%, that roofer costs you $34.58 an hour before any vehicle or equipment share. Pricing off $26.00 instead of $34.58 understates every quote you write — over 9 hours it is $77.22 you never billed.
Markup is a percentage of your cost; margin is a percentage of your price. Add 35% to a $1,881.22 job and you bill $2,539.65 — but the margin you actually keep is 25.9%, not 35%, because 35% / 1.35 = 25.9% every single time. Pricing for a real 35% margin bills $2,894.18. That is $354.54 on one job, and at 2 a week it is $36,871.91 a year.
